We heard the soon-to-be ex-governor was in town to clean out the
Governor's Mansion.
She did not respond to an invitation to be in the parade or
participate in the re-enactment of the flag raising to commemorate
Alaska's 50th year of statehood.
The Juneau family, the city founders, gathered from all over the world
for a family reunion and to march in the parade. The parade displayed
the pride, patriotic spirit and diversity of the city.

Juneau celebrated their 50th year of statehood with midnight fireworks
over the Gastineau Channel.

The day started with a nice stroll through the Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
The vegetable garden provided produce to Juneau grocers in the early
1900s and continues to assist with local food banks.
The arboretum was a gift to Juneau from Caroline Jensen, a long-time
resident and Master Gardener.
Next on the agenda; a hike along the Herbert Glacier Trail.
The trail is 4.6 miles long and winds up at the Herbert Glacier; the
only problem is you have to hike the same 4.6 miles back to the trail
head and car.
We found a car along the trail that was unable to complete the round
trip.
The mosquitos could have made the hike very uncomfortable if we had
had not worn are mosquito nets.
KC declared this hike a tribute to Michael Jackson since he was know
for his different head coverings.

Today we visited the Alaska State Museum to gain some insight to the
different cultures, events and wildlife throughout the history of
Alaska.
After touring the museum, we ate lunch at the Flight Deck and watched
the float planes take off and land amongst the boats and cruise ships.
We continued by touring the campus of the University of Alaska -
Southeast Campus; there is some beautiful mountain scenery on the
campus.
We also made a return visit to the Shrine of St. Therese and spend
some time relaxing on the banks of the Lynn Canal watching the salmon
jumping in the water.
Hooray, today is the first day the sun has shined all day and it has
not rained.

Spent much of the morning searching for the Juneau re-cycling
facility, which turned out to be managed by Waste Management.
We hiked the Douglas Island Outer Point and Rainforest Trails down to
the tide pools; the trails reminded me of the muskeg trails in
Petersburg.
We then explored the residential neighborhoods of Douglas Island where
we found some high ground that provided some nice views of Juneau's
city center.
